What is navigation testing?
Navigation testing checks whether people can find what they came for. You give someone a real task, such as changing a delivery address or finding the refund policy, and record where they click first, the route they take, and whether they arrive. The menu, the labels, and the layout are all on trial at once.
Two methods do most of the work. A first-click test shows one screen and records the first click for a task, which predicts success better than anything else in the journey. A tree test strips the design away and tests the labels and hierarchy alone, so you know whether a wrong turn came from the words or from the layout.
The result is the task people could not complete, the label or menu that sent them the wrong way, and the reason in their words. That is enough to fix the navigation before a redesign, or to check that a redesign fixed it.
